Muscle Health, Growth, and Maintenance
Share
Maintaining muscle health throughout your life may be one of the most important things you do. Your muscles are responsible for all your movement and many neglect to take care of them, either through lack of exercise, supplementation, or having a poor diet. Taking care of your muscles can improve everything from sleep, to immune strength, to how well your muscles function later in your life.
Age-related muscle loss, called sarcopenia, is a natural part of aging. After age 30, you begin to lose as much as 3% to 5% per decade. Most men will lose about 30% of their muscle mass during their lifetimes.
Less muscle means greater weakness and less mobility, both of which may increase your risk of falls and fractures. A 2015 report from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research found that people with sarcopenia had 2.3 times the risk of having a low-trauma fracture from a fall, such as a broken hip, collarbone, leg, arm, or wrist.
The best way to avoid muscle loss, and maintain good muscle heath, is including protein in your diet, and resistance training in your life. A protein supplement like our Wellness Code® Protein Powders and our protein bars can help you get the protein you need to grow muscle. An additional supplement we can recommend is our Wellness Code® Muscle Strength And Restore Formula containing HMB. HMB is a bioactive metabolite of the branched-chain amino acid leucine. HMB has been shown to help maintain muscle function and support muscle growth, especially for those over 65.
HMB and Older Adults: In a 24-week, randomized, placebo-controlled study, adults 65 years and older were divided into an exercise group and a non-exercise group. Both groups took either 3 g of HMB twice a day or a placebo. The non-exercise group that took HMB showed signs of improved muscle health — but the exercise group's results were even better, improving measurements of muscle function and lean mass.
